About the chess tournaments

Kryal Castle Chess Shield 2024

Venue: Kryal Castle (Map)
121 Forbes Rd, Leigh Creek
(15 minutes from Ballarat town centre)
Dates: Wednesday 17th April - Secondary Open Championship
Thursday 18th April - Primary Open Championship
Time: Sign-in from 9:30am to 10:00am
Finish 2:00pm (approx.)
Explore the grounds until 3:00pm after the tournament is finished!
Cost: $25 per player
  • Registered through school - schools will be invoiced after the event
  • Registered as individual - pay cash at sign in
Format:
  • 7-rounds Swiss tournaments. All students play 7 games
  • Secondary Division: 10 min + 2 sec per player per game
  • Primary Division: 12 min per player per game
Prizes:
Individual merit prizes
Standard Northern Star Chess zonal tournament prizes apply. This includes:
  • A certificate for every student - 4 levels of certificates awarded based on final scores
  • Medals for multiple categories in each division
  • One trophy per division - the Star Of The Tournament trophy is awarded to the top scorer of each division
School Team Prizes:
  • Kryal Caslte Chess Shield Champion Trophy for the winning schools of the Primary Open and Secondary Open Championship divisions
  • Zonal School Champion Trophy for the winning school of any other division
  • Name of winning school of the Primary Open and Secondary Open divisions to be engraved on the perpetual Kryal Castle Chess Shield
  • Top 3 schools of each division to receive a Deluxe tournament pack that includes:
    1. a tournament size chess set with extra queens
    2. a tournament size vinyl, cloth-backed roll up chess board
    3. storage pouch for pieces
    4. chess clock
    Note: Top 4 scores from each school team is used to determine team standing. In the case of a tie, additional scores for the tied schools will be used to determine standing within the tied schools
State qualifications: Northern Star Chess suite of state final events are held in term 4. Qualification is based on individual final standing and will be announced at presentation.
  • Top 30% (approx) of Secondary Open division qualify for the
    NSC Secondary Open state final
  • Additionally, top 30% (approx) of Girls in the Secondary Open division qualify for the
    NSC Secondary Girls state final
  • Top 30% (approx) of Primary Open division qualify for one of the
    NSC Primary Open semi-finals
  • Additionally, top 30% (approx) of Girls in the Primary Open division qualify for the
    NSC Primary Girls state final
